Advanced application of collagen-based biomaterials in tissue repair and restoration

Abstract In tissue engineering, bioactive materials play an important role, providing structural support, cell regulation and establishing a suitable microenvironment to promote regeneration. As the main component of extracellular matrix, collagen is natural material it has been widely used in scientific research clinical applications. Collagen available from wide range animal origin, can be produced by synthesis or through recombinant protein production systems. The use pure inherent disadvantages terms physico-chemical properties. For this reason, processed different ways better match specific requirements as biomaterial for repair. Here, may bone/cartilage regeneration, skin cardiovascular repair other fields, following processing methods, including cross-linked collagen, complex, structured mineralized carrier forms, promoting development engineering. This review summarizes applications collagen-based biomaterials their recent progress several regeneration fields.
